Julie Adams, right, owner of the Miller Valley Indoor Art Mart, and Donna Meraz, owner of Cafe Nouveau inside the art mart, opened their businesses recently in Prescott.

PRESCOTT - Artists have another venue in town where they may display and sell their creations - and they do not have to be on-site.

Julie Adams, owner/manager/buyer at Miller Valley Art Market at 531 Madison Ave., said many artists nevertheless like to hang out at the building, which formerly housed the Eumundi art mart.

Adams, who had been an art gallery manager for 20 years, opened the art market this past November, three months after relocating to Prescott with husband Bob from Las Cruces, N.M. She now rents space to more than 100 artists who also pay a percentage of their proceeds. One cash register handles all transactions.

The artwork includes handmade crafts, metal work, photography, wood-carving, stained glass, ceramics and custom furniture.

One vendor, Donna Meraz, sells Native American art and operates the Nouveau Café, where she sells gelato, other treats and coffee. Meraz, who opened the café two weeks ago, said she named it for the late Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, who was known for his Art Nouveau poster art.

"I love the people and I love the atmosphere," Meraz said. "We want people to know they can come in and relax and enjoy ice cream and coffee, and spend time looking at the fabulous art."

Meraz said Adams brainstormed about putting a café in the middle of the art mart, which covers 7,000 square feet.

Adams has more plans for the art mart, and indicated she wants to become involved in the community.

"We want to be the place to be for art and become a tourist attraction," Adams said.

Her first plan involves sponsoring art walks from 5 to 7 p.m. on the fourth Fridays of the month.

The events will feature food, beverages and live music. The first one will take place this Friday with an opening reception.

The Miller Valley Indoor Art Market is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Summer hours are until 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, call 237-9282 or log onto www.MillerValleyIndoorArtMarket.com.
