Texting dispute leads to assault charges for PV man

McGill

A Prescott Valley man who allegedly was upset that his girlfriend was texting her ex-husband now faces serious criminal charges.

Prescott Valley police booked David Lea McGill, 46, into the Yavapai County Jail on Monday on felony charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment, all per domestic violence.

Shortly after midnight, officers answered a call in the 8800 block of Beaver about a woman screaming for help. They spoke to a woman who said she had been texting her ex-husband about their children, which made McGill angry, Prescott Valley Police Sgt. Brandon Bonney said.

The woman told officers that McGill shoved her several times, put his hand over her throat so that she could not breathe, and refused to let her leave the home, Bonney said.

The woman told officers that McGill told her to go to sleep. Later she told McGill she needed to go to the bathroom, then ran from the residence screaming for someone to help her.

A neighbor heard the woman's cries for help and called police, Bonney said.

"It is very important for people who hear something like this or believe someone is in danger to call their local police," Bonney said. "It is not uncommon for individuals to believe it is not their business or think someone else may have called. Don't assume this. If someone is in danger and needs help, please call."

The woman told officers that McGill chased her, grabbed her over the mouth to keep her quiet, then pulled her into the residence at one point with his hands around her mouth and her neck and throat area, Bonney said.

The victim fought back and McGill sustained minor injuries as a result.

When investigators spoke to McGill, he allegedly made numerous incriminating statements about his involvement, his story was consistent with what the victim reported, and he expressed remorse for his actions.
