Candlelight vigil to honor victims of family violence
10/20/2012 9:50:00 PM
The Yavapai Family Advocacy Center and the
Prescott Valley Police Department
will host a Take Back the Night event for victims of family violence from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24.
"The Take Back the Night event is an opportunity for survivors, supporters and community leaders to come together and honor victims of family violence," Prescott Valley Police Officer Paul Dunn said. "The event will raise awareness of the growing problem of family violence."
The candlelight vigil will take place at the amphitheater outside Town Hall at 7501 E. Civic Circle in Prescott Valley, and at the end of the ceremony, victims may come up to the microphone to tell their personal story as part of the healing process, Dunn said.
Prescott Valley Town Council
Member Lora Lee Nye will be the master of ceremonies, Mayor Harvey Skoog will give a proclamation commemorating October as domestic violence awareness month, and Prescott Valley Police Chief Bill Fessler will be the featured speaker.
The Prescott Valley Police Department's Family Violence Unit, which includes Cpl. Mike Williams, Detective James Tobin, Community Services Officer (CSO) Traci Shelburg, and technical assistant Dorothy Shippen, started in 2009 after Gov. Jan Brewer awarded a grant for the department to hire a detective and CSO to help violent crime victims. The unit helps with investigations and conducts follow up on family violence cases.
Over the past three years, the unit has made great strides in how Prescott Valley police respond to crimes against victims and has been a leader in creating a coordinated community response, Dunn said.
