A thrilling finish on the season's last night wasn't enough to vault the Yavapai College volleyball team into the playoffs.
The Roughriders entered Friday night's doubleheader against Arizona Western in Yuma needing to sweep the twinbill in order to have a chance at qualifying for the postseason. They did indeed sweep, but the regular season ended with all four Div. 1 teams - Yavapai, Western, Central Arizona and Eastern Arizona - in a literal tie with identical 10-6 ACCAC records, and only two playoff spots to be had.
At a coaches' meeting Saturday, official conference rules stated that the tiebreaker scenario for three or more teams is to compare the team's record against each of the tied teams.
Yavapai had a combined record of 4-5 against its fellow D-1 teams, Central also was 4-5, and Eastern and Western each had 5-4 marks.
As a result, Eastern Arizona will match up with Arizona Western in Yuma this Wednesday night for the Region 1 Championship and the right to advance to the NJCAA District Playoffs.
Yavapai and Central saw their seasons come to an end.
The Roughriders conclude with a 28-7 overall record, the most single-seasons wins for the program since 1997 (31), and the fifth best record in program history.
Yavapai's Lauren Bevan was voted First Team All-Conference and Division I All-Region. Jen Sadler was named Second Team All-Conference and Division I All-Region. Libby Ary earned ACCAC Honorable Mention.
