Mayer boys hoops can't keep up with Salt River

Salt River 63

Mayer boys 14

Mayer is indeed "a work in progress," as coach Roland Medina put it Tuesday night after his Wildcats lost their 2012-13 season opener by 49 points at home.

Forward Shawnee Day paced Mayer offensively with 8 points in a game in which the Wildcats trailed 37-7 at halftime.

"They (Salt River) came out hard and we didn't really control the offensive end of the game," Medina said. "We were down by 10, 20 points before we knew it."

Mayer struggled with its shot selection and did not handle Salt River's press very well, the veteran coach added.

"We just didn't play as well as we should," Medina said. "We're a better team than this."

The Wildcats head to the Phoenix Country Day Tournament next Friday and Saturday and will face host Phoenix Country Day in their first contest.
