The Courier Sports section is presenting "10 Teams in 10 Days" in which we'll run down each of the 10 CHL teams. Today it's the Missouri Mavericks, and watch Sunday for the Quad City Mallards.
The Mavericks were a CHL expansion team in 2009-10, and emerged quickly as a playoff contender. Under inaugural head coach Scott Hillman, the Mavericks advanced to the second round of the CHL playoffs in their first two years, and to the Conference Finals last year where they lost in seven games to eventual Ray Miron Cup champion Fort Wayne. Earlier this year, the team gave Hillman a two-year contract extension.
Last year, in their third CHL season, the Mavs finished third in the Turner Conference with a 39-21-6 record and 84 points, scoring the fifth most goals in the league (223). They were one of only three clubs last year with as many as 20 wins on the road.
All-Star forward Andrew Courtney is back with the Mavericks in 2012-13, one season after he scored 59 points in 63 games.
The club plays at the Independence Events Center in Independence, Mo., near Kansas City. This year they renewed their affiliation agreement with the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves; the Vancouver Canucks' top farm team.
The Sundogs host the Mavericks in their home-opening series at Tim's Toyota Center Oct. 26-27 in Missouri's only Prescott Valley appearance.
