The Courier Sports section is presenting "10 Teams in 10 Days" in which we'll run down each of the 10 CHL teams. Today it's the Quad City Mallards, and watch Monday for the Rapid City Rush.
The Quad City Mallards are entering just their third CHL season this year, but hockey chops they've got.
The franchise, which plays its home games in Moline, Ill. (about 150 miles west of Chicago) in what's known as the quad cities area of Illinois and Iowa, joined the Phoenix-based league in 2010-11 after the International Hockey League merged with the CHL.
But the original Mallards, which played in the mid-1990s, enjoyed home attendance that regularly topped 6,000 fans per game. The club became the first hockey team in the minor or major leagues to record 5 straight seasons of 50 or more wins; a feat that landed the team in the hockey Hall of Fame.
The Mallards earlier this month reported for their first training camp under two-time CHL title-winning coach Terry Ruskowski. "Rosco" led the Laredo Bucks to four straight finals appearances between 2004-07, and twice won the Ray Miron Presidents' Cup (2004, '06). Ruskowski, 57, served as captain for the Chicago Blackhawks between 1979-82. In all, he played 999 career games for 6 teams over 15 NHL seasons. Over 17 seasons as a head coach, he's 11 wins shy of 600.
The Mallards visit Tim's Toyota Center Jan. 25-26.
