Blog: Meditation, really?
Life transitions can sometimes be really fun and exciting. However, some transitions just aren't - they are all consuming and seem to snowball during the worst possible moment. How are you supposed to possibly get through your day when you're already exhausted?

Blog: What's hidden beneath the surface of a man
This week I met a man named Jim Greenwood. At first glance he appears to be an average 57-year-old husband and father. Like most of us he works each day to scratch out a living. I believe he installs floors and does other home improvements.

Blog: Monsoon rain - turn a big problem into a big asset
Monsoon rains often come in the form of torrential downpours that produce a lot of water in a short period of time. The resulting runoff from downspouts and driveways can make a big mess of your yard. With some simple solutions for directing runoff and creating appropriate areas for that water to infiltrate into the soil, you can turn a big problem into a big asset: FREE irrigation!

Blog: Fearing the fear of your fear factor
Greetings, after a long hiatus. I haven't been in hiding, just busy with this and that. Been writing for the paper more than usual, and that will continue Friday night when I'm dutifully pressed into service helping our Sports department which - while waiting for a new writer to start next week - has asked me to cover the Yavapai College soccer team's season opener at Mountain Valley Park in Prescott Valley. Hope to see you out there. My predicted score in a minute.

Blog: Prescott Farmers Market. What have I been missing?
Part of what the WIC program offers is a voucher that can be used to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at the Prescott Farmers Market. I was surprised when I heard this because I knew very little about the Prescott Farmers Market and was even more surprised when I found out that they are in Prescott Valley once a week! This is when I realized that I needed to get out more.

Blog: Capture of fugitives brings sigh of relief, dodged bullet
By now you've heard (or read) that fugitives John McCluskey and Casslyn Welch were apprehended by authorities Thursday in Springerville, Ariz., after three weeks on the run.

A SWAT team from the Apache County Sheriff's Office arrested the couple at a campground on the edge of the Apache National Forest, near the New Mexico state line, thanks to an observant Forest Service employee.

Blog: What's it like to be old?
Have you ever walked by a mirror and caught the reflection of an old person glancing back at you, and then suddenly been struck with a confusing moment as you realize the old person is you? It can be disheartening.

Blog: A little social(ism) distortion please
Have I really been gone that long? Last time I checked, oil was still gushing into the gulf, Lindsay Lohan was out of jail and LeBron hadn't made up his mind yet.

Blog: Pesky little critters can cause big trouble for horses
It's that time of year again when those pesky critters called flies start irritating our livestock. Not all pest control seems to work for every animal. I recently had the experience of hives on one of my horses. I walked to the barn one morning last week and what a surprise when I met up with a horse that had big huge lumps the diameter of my fist that protruded from her belly about 1/2 inch high.

Blog: Smoking for two - the dangers of smoking while pregnant
Spoil alert, spoil alert. Stop reading if don't want to know what happens in the third book in the Twilight series called Breaking Dawn. Yes, I admit it. My 13-year-old daughter has me hooked and I'm a proud member of "Team Jacob." I know I'm old enough to be his mother but I was a 13-year-old girl once.

Blog: Moving a Loved One Tips
It is very easy to get physically, emotionally, and mentally overwhelmed at the thought of moving a loved one out of their home. Someone once told me to 'Chop Wood, Boil Water' (Chinese Proverb). It means to just do what is next.

Water Wise Blog: Reduce utility bills by collecting rainwater
When you consider not only the inevitable rise in the price of municipal water, but the high quality of rainwater, and the independence and self-reliance that comes from collecting it, rain water harvesting in Arizona just makes good common sense.

Blog: Undocumented immigrants leaving Arizona - isn't that the point?
I've purposely avoided treading too closely on this fine political line in light of recent events, not to mention the newest addition of SB 1070 to Arizona state law books, in an effort to try and keep my wits and sanity about me. I'll disclose that this seems to get tougher by the day.

Blog: Instant replay is the future
The World Cup referees whose staggering incompetence hurt Team USA, Mexico and England - if not many others - during this go-round is just more proof that old chestnut about how important the human element is when it comes to officiating sports needs to be taken out behind the barn, tied to a tree and retired.

Blog: In which I admit my parenting is rubbish
Show me a contemporary mother and I will show you a nervous wreck. Whether they work or stay at home, have one kid or several, neurosis is an equal opportunity affliction. What is it about the age we live in that has made us so paranoid about the health and well-being of our kids?

Blog: You've heard of memes, but what are they?
Maybe you saw them mentioned on Twitter, or in an article that you read somewhere. But what exactly are Internet memes?

The term "meme" was actually coined back in 1976 by British scientist Richard Dawkins. At the time, it was meant to indicate the spread of ideas and culture, be it fashion, lingo or technology of the day. Today the most common use of the word refers to things that are lately funny on the Internet.
