Letter: Cut frills for rich, put people to work

EDITOR:

To make reducing the deficit work, you must cut or reduce all the things that help people who are just barely getting by, programs such as Medicare, Social Security, food stamps, etc. Really, all you have to do is ask all those filthy rich people who could never spend all the money they have accumulated to donate a percentage of the wealth to help the government if it is so important to reduce the deficit.

Didn't we have a similar problem during the Great Depression, and Roosevelt felt that the only way to work our way out of this deep hole we were in was to spend money? Government-initiated programs built the Hoover Dam, fixed infrastructure, worked on the national parks, etc. We enjoy the fruits of this labor to this day.

So my suggestion is to cut out the fat of all the waste, none of which is usually Medicare and Social Security. We could start with raising taxes for the wealthy by 1 percent, making our representatives live on their income (like all the rest of us do) instead of all the free services they enjoy, such as limousines and free lunches in the Capitol dining room. After all, these people are not only rich in their own right, but they do earn a pretty good salary in their jobs.

So quit harping about reducing the deficit spending until after we actually get people back to work so they can start earning an income that will stimulate the economy and produce more tax revenue.

especially with the rich politicians in our Congress. Let's start there with their overblown salaries, pensions, healthcare, credit cards, tax breaks, stocks, etc. Overpaid do-nothings who do not represent the common working class people.

The rich receive more welfare from the government than you know. The rich buy the government. The government gives billions in PUBLIC resources to corporations each year. Rich received 200 million of acres of PUBLIC land. Rich receive PUBLIC raw materials and minerals that guarantee profit.
Rich bankers do NOT go to jail or suffer.
Class warfare has been waged.
It is time for the common man to fight back!

More people would listen if you didn't make your resentment toward all wealthy so clear. Warren Buffet supports giving more and so do some other wealthy people. You just put everyone in one category like everyone who has money is an evil banker. How do you hope to gain support by demonizing all wealthy people. It sounds like you have issues of your own that make you resent the rich. You sound just like some conservatives who bash on Obama like he's an evil Muslim foreigner trying to destroy America. Make your point without sounding ignorant.

Article comment by: Workers vs. Voters

The problem today is there are too many voters and not enough workers. Workers pay taxes, voters who don't work, rack up the deficit.

One more time, take all the rich peoples money, not just taxes, all their money and it would only pay for approx 7-8 days of this governments spending. Then they will be after yours and mine.

Donate money to help the government pay the deficit, are you serious? They needs to balance the budget and stop spending first. Doesn't help to donate money to a deficit with too many holes in it. Just pores out the other side. You must be an Obama liberal to defend this moron,

Yes, I "earned" my tax cut for my personal jet and my show horse and installation of my car elevator. I earned all those frills and certainly did not use my wealth or power to cut better deals for myself and others like me with politicians and the tax code.

Gloria, you are the perfect Obama mouthpiece. Raise taxes, spend more money, and everything will fall into place. Have you been to Greece lately? France? They work less, retire early, pay more taxes, and still gripe about it. We'll get there, just be patient Gloria.

You’re expressing the frustration of growing number of people. Economic down turn has been long and shows little sign of rapid recovery. Those near the top are frustrated, the shrinking middle class is in poverty or hanging on to meager retirement, and those now in poverty somehow blamed for the economic problems of the world.

Let's cut the deficit and help those that want to go back to work by cutting all the pet programs. Quit funding the federal study on whether mashed potatoes tastes better with gravy or butter or will growing algae stop the alleged global warming situation. Take the money that is being wasted by the federal government and put it into the entitlements which will solve that problem. Don't make successful people into "bad people". We must stop overspending as a nation. That starts at the top.

The poor "get" frills, the rich "earn" them..... Unfortunatly the ignorant majority will not be happy until the have all the working mans money, and at that point we all will be poor.

Yes, Gloria, the opinion and philosophy in your letter is correct, but misses the point. While it is true that during the Great Depression of the 1930's FDR did in fact think the only way out was to "...spend money..." (your words). The difference between then and now is that under FDR type programs the money was paid to people to be industrious, and WORK. Build things. Take control of their lives and prosper.

All we are doing now, under the grand tutelage of Wrong Way Obama and Boom Boom Biden, is paying the 2013 descendants of those proud American dam builders, road constructors, and powerline installers of the 1930's to...STAY HOME AND DO NOTHING!

Instead of today's unemployed (sick, lame, lazy) working to create something useful, like those of the 1930'S, artificial tax dollars are now foolishly pumped into EBT cards, job training for jobs that don't exist (and never will), self-esteem programs, drug awareness, abortions, and about 200 other worthless money-sucking Freedom Killer programs mandated out of the DC swamp, by socialist (people) themselves get big bucks from the taxpayer, but don't have to worry about an EBT.

Whoa Gloria, Your comments appear to have flames coming out of your nostrils when you refer to "RICH" people. Your hatred appears to be far deeper than just trying to get their money, it is laced with resentment.

YOU unknowingly hit one problem head on. YOU said "Government-initiated programs built the Hoover Dam, fixed infrastructure, worked on the national parks, etc." That was back THEN, now so called poor people don't need to work to build a damn dam, they only have to sit on their butts and pop little bundles into the World while collecting "OUR" money.

Gloria, you need to look deeper into our fiscal problems than provided by MSNBC and your Democrat Newsletter.

"Deficits don't matter" Dick Cheney, (unless a Democrat is in office.) The priority needs to be full employment. Not job killing austerity and Supply-side measures that proved disastrous to economy and drove the huge deficit.

We get out the way we got in. Fix the tax code, get out of the wars, cut the military and bargain for prescription drugs.

We need to fully fund the public sector jobs that were lost, teachers, fire, police and services. That alone would lower the unemployment rate to near 6%. The spending problem that created this deficit under Bush, and the weak stimulus spending under Obama necessitated by the former's failed policies are drivers of deficit. The safety net spending shrinks with full employment, but are the effect rather than the cause, as the Conservatives want argue but lost the debate in the election. So, the priorities are clear, full employment not austerity is how we get back to balance.

Although, I see why it is necessary to block the President at all turns and seek ways to destroy the economy to make the conservatives self fulfilling wish come true. They might succeed, but that only means we don't. Not that their policies could succeed because we tried that approach, and it failed.
