3/25/2013 10:00:00 PM Letter: Joan Fleming gave students her best
I would like to thank Karen Despain for her recent excellent article regarding Joan Fleming and her contributions to our community and specifically the Prescott Unified School District. I had the opportunity to work closely with Joan as the district superintendent following Dr. Howard from 1998 through 2001 during a time of fiscal and leadership changes within the district and witnessed firsthand her expertise and dedication to the district and its students. Her diligence in making wise decisions that affected the students and the school's instructional programs were always of the highest priority. She will be truly missed as a leader of our district and our community.
I also had the pleasure of working with Dr. Fleming in her position as an officer and President of the Arizona School Boards Association after my retirement from Prescott Unifed and employment by ASBA as a regional director. She displayed the same leadership skills demonstrated at PUSD in supporting the statewide mission of ASBA of developing quality leadership programs for school board members across Arizona. We often traveled the state together to visit with school district boards on location to discuss the important aspects of being a quality board member and many issues relating to current legislation in the State of Arizona.
Finally, I would like to mention how Joan was a true champion of the cause for the development of women in the role of school leadership in our state and allowing all district leaders to develop their full potential to serve the students and their school community in our state and at our local district.
Thank you for allowing me to make additional comments for the record in regards to my colleague and friend Dr. Joan Fleming.
