Letter: Anti-contraception stance will doom us

EDITOR:

What a great column in the Sunday, July 14, paper by syndicated columnist Maria Fotopoulos: "Population growth rate unsustainable." I'm sure those on the right have heard of Jonathan Last's book, "What to Expect When No One's expecting ... America's Demographic Disaster." This column is a great rebuttal. It bothers me how little discussion there is about population and its impact on everything. It is nonsensical to be against abortion and contraception.

To quote Bonnie Vitti, president of the Louis and Harold Price Foundation (Louis Price, her great-grandfather, was a founding partner in the Sara Lee baking company), "The vast majority of unintended pregnancies could be prevented if there was a concerted effort to make sex education and contraception more readily available. Instead, there's an assault on contraception. I would think that if someone's primary concern was to reduce the number of abortions, then they would think it was in the interest of society, humanity, and morality to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies."

I couldn't have said it better myself.

According to Ayn Rand a true feminist in "The Voice of Reason"

"An embryo has no rights. Rights do not pertain to a potential, only to an actual being. A child cannot acquire any rights until it is born. The living take precedence over the not-yet-living (or the unborn).

Abortion is a moral rightwhich should be left to the sole discretion of the woman involved morally, nothing other than her wish in the matter is to be considered. Who can conceivably have the right to dictate to her what disposition she is to make of the functions of her own body?"

I truly believe that if men had babies, needed to be the responsible ones for raising them for 21 years, and had to do the "mothering", birth control being available would be a "no-brainer." Come on guys, step up and deny yourselves the rest of your lives because you have the COMPLETE responsibility for fathering AND mothering. DON'T go to college, get an education or spend your younger years "sowing Your Oats." After all, that should be left up to the women of the world. I have never heard such Chauvenistic garbage. After all, the wise men of Texas know what's best for women...just ask them!! Yet. thousands of women are told to keep their legs crossed, never make a poor decision during their immature years, and "suck-it-up" when they have to live on food stamps (which the chauvenists hate), become "welfare mothers" (Also despised) and live with a poor decision impacting the rest of their lives. NO birth control, no morning after pill, just let them reap the full fury of a bad decision or, even a rape. YES, it is right and just and a "God given right" for men to make such decisions. Sorry, it is NOT your body, YOUR future, or YOUR life. Morality is easy to dictate when it effects "someone else." A little "compassionate conservatism" would go a long ways!! I have known personally, as a nurse and friend, many women left with such a choice. This is not to say that aren't countless numbers of wonderful fathers and men out there but, really, it is not YOUR choice OR your body.

Article comment by: Religons of Empire

The fertility caste, the favorite of the religions of the empires, and one of the last walls of the empire to fall.

If you can control the female, you control her mate. The method of control by the empire of religion is population control by the corporatist empire that it serves their profit.

And the corporatist empire profits most politically, and therefore economically, from divisiveness over the religious strictures against self determination and liberation women as equals, and not lower in caste status, as imposed by medieval superstitions.

A woman's fertility has always been controlled by her burden of being in the vassals caste, and by the divine right of the lord of the castle to control, and by the dominion of the churches justifying the empires.

Or maybe I have not gotten my latest update edition of the Bible. It's probably too early for the revisionist to make the 'corrections' to suite their denomination's brand.

In response to John Galt, you might consider the comments of Rev. Peter S. Sawtell, executive director for Eco-Justice Ministries, who summarized the population problem quite well. He said:

Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. Its time for us to recognize that that be one Biblical commandment where you can say, Check, weve done that what else should we do? I dont see how we can look at the devastation thats happening to the planet and the poor quality of life that many people have and still say that basic levels of birth control and family planning are inappropriate. I find that a morally very confusing stance.

"Too many people, with too much technology, using too much of nature, too fast." David Suzuki

There is a limit folks, and we are getting there. There is nothing more sad to me than an unwanted or neglected child. To not give men and women the knowledge and tools to avoid conceiving a child until they are ready is the worst kind of tyranny.

Mary,

So, when does personal responsibility and accountability become the rules for everyone to live by? It seems that our country has become a giant nanny state. To listen to people like you we now need to concern ourselves with people that apparently cant keep themselves from having sex and pollinating by providing, at taxpayer expense, contraceptives? Let me tell you, I know that there is one sure fire way to avoid unplanned pregnancies. ABSTINENCE!

If we want to control the population why should we stop with just abortion of the helpless unborn. if we are going to choose who we execute why not also start at the other end of the age spectrum and make it legal to euthanize any old people who have become unable to defend themselves. I'm just coming up with ideas to help your population control cause.

Yes, and it would also help if the government wouldn't enable welfare (people) to profit from this by paying child support for their once-a-year babies!

Absolutely correct! I'm pro-life in reality but also know that the way the pro-lifers are going about pushing their idealism is crazy to say the least.California has already proved that with sex education along with birth control in schools unwanted pregnancies and abortions have decreased by 60% in just a few years. Pro-life advocates not only want to abolish abortions but also push no birth control or sex education. Mindless idealism that makes for more unwanted pregnancies and abortions!

Ms. Bradley quotes an ancestor of a baker. I'll quote her Lord and Maker, "And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it : and have dominion over the fish of the sea , and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth."

Just heard on the news that the African country of Niger, which is the size of Texas, will soon pass the US in population and left unchecked will surpass India and then China by 2100. That's just one country of many that will stretch the earths resources beyond its capabilities.

Birth control, along with real sex education, should be as common as vaccinations. And like everything else that affects human welfare keep religion out of the equation.

The solution to overpopulation in the US: stop the massive immigration, QED.

Without all the additional people from Mexico and from Central America, who have quite high fertility rates, the US population would have hit ZPG sometime in the 1970's.

Alas, not a politically correct opinion to hold, but there you go.

It's a rather a shame, really. If you want to find a reason for stagnant or declining real wages among the 99%, look no further. More people = less stuff per person, and is observable in 2-300 year cycles in Europe, rather than the ever expanding economy that cornucopians seem to believe in.
