Letter: We must change our socialist path

Socialism will not repair the years of damage done to an intended free market and to the freedom that free enterprise forwards in the United States. Socialism exercising the expansion of governmental intrusion into Americans' everyday life has diminished our country into a nation in debt.

We, as Americans, have the right to try and fail without guarantee of success or repression of governmental limitation of success. The centralized governmental approach directing the economy in the United States since I have been of the age of reason has failed. This country is nearly 17 trillion dollars in debt and has its eyes on continuing the same old way of doing business.

Both Democrat and Republican regimes have diminished individual accountability, responsibility and reward. It appears at all levels of government it is easier to assign the accountability to someone else and especially the mass. This recipe for failure has trickled down even to municipal levels where government closest to the people can, by logic, serve best.

Government at all levels continues to "fund" non-essentials in an attempt to satisfy an insatiable appetite for wants over need using someone else's money in an attempt to appeal to special interest.

There are criminal terrorists on Arizona's southern border and the White House, who has the constitutional obligation of protecting Americans, through its emissaries armed, aided, and abetted our enemies. Recently produced videos of foreign insurgents attacking American soldiers and diplomats combined with dead border patrol agents in Arizona suggests incompetence in the White House.

I hope this country is not lulled into the same apathetic complacent scenario we were before World War II. It is evident those in leadership in Washington will capitulate American safety for global approval and acceptance. This is not acceptable to the American people. It is not acceptable to see our president bow down and suck up to folks who have by faith determined they want to destroy America and kill Americans.

Jim Lamerson

Right on! I am so weary of reading comments about Socialists and Marxists by people who obviously have no clue about what Socialism and Marxism are.

We do have a couple of Socialist organizations in the US. One is the VA health system. The government owns the hospitals, clinics, and offices. Doctors and nurses work for the government as do the clerical workers. The other Socialist organization is the US military. The government owns all of the buildings, equipment, weapons, etc., and the personnel are paid by the government.

Aside from those two, I can't think of any others but maybe some of those throwing the terms around without understanding them can come up with something.

ObamaCare is NOT socialism. All the services are provided by private organizations. It is not free, it is funded by premiums paid by me and you. Except for those who cannot afford the insurance premiums, they get governmentr assistance.

Social Security is not a give-away program. I have paid into it every year escept the six that I was in the army.

Medicare is not a give-away program. I paid into it while I was working and I pay into it now that I am retired.

SSI, Medicaid, and welfare could be called give-away programs EXCEPT that

Unemployment benefits are not a give-away program, they are paid for by premiums. They are insurance Sure, the premiums are paid by the employer, but do you think the employer doesn't think about that when the pay scale is established?

So, just once more, in case anybody m issed it:

Reagan and GW Bush we're mostly responsible for our debt crisis. Reagan preached less govt. and then expanded it, ballooning the Defense budget with Star Wars and Bush lowered taxes, then promptly started two futile, expensive wars, advocated less policing of banks and Wall Street, then spent a bundle trying to save them from their greedy mis-adventures. Stop blaming Obama. Be a part of the solution....not another problem.

I, for one, want to commend Councilmen Lamerson. He single-handedly has convinced me to go to the polls and vote the next time he runs for office ....... for the other candidate. I'd vote for Ev Mecham before I'd ever vote for Lamerson!

@hooty hoo. My suggestion to you is before you label something, you find out what the label means. Clearly you don't know what socialism is.
Here are some facts for you. If you had socialized medicine, you would call a government employee to schedule an appointment. No person exists under Obamacare. Then you would go to your appointment and check in to the office with a government employer receptionist. No such person exists under Obamacare. Next, you would see a doctor who is employed by the government. No such person exists under Obamacare. If it were determined that you needed an operation, you would report to the government hospital. No such facility exists under Obamacare. If you needed a prescriptiozn, you would get it from the government drug dispensary. No such service is available under Obamacare. You wouldn't need to buy medical insurance from Aetna, or United healthcare as those companies would not be needed under Obamacare. Notice, they still exist and their existence is pretty much guaranteed under Obamacare.
The facts are all, and I mean ALL the players involved in delivering medical services before the passing of Obamacare are the same after the passing of Obamacare. Those are Private physicians nurses, lab techs., clerical workers, private hospitals, private clinics, private drug stores, Private for profit health insurance companies.
We have many things in this society that are socialist. And they all existed before Obama was sworn in. Obamacare is not one of them.

Article comment by: Prescott Finds Its Bachmann--Lucky Us

Just prior to the Civil War, February 8th, 1861 (prior to Lincoln's taking office), former congressman James L. Petigru famously remarked, "South Carolina is too small for a republic and too large for an insane asylum."
Well, that certainly describes this Republican/Teabagger controlled area of Yavapai. This man Lamerson, who lives in a dream world, was elected, not appointed, but, until people vote him out, is destined for Yavapai
"greatness." Things around here will never get better until men such as he are voted out. No political moderate of either party would want to live in such a goofy area. It borders on mass psychosis.

It is impossible to take anyone using the name "Hooty Hoo" seriously. Can you imagine being operated on by Dr. Hooty Hoo? I'd rather take advice from Kermit the Frog.

It's not cool to be a socialist. It gives those old Cold War heebie jeebies, you see the old B&W shots of Russians in fur hats in the snow. But Obama's a socialist through and through. Can anyone doubt that, with ObamaCare as his centerpiece? C'mon people. I'm not saying all socialism is bad, but anyone who says he isn't can't find their butt with both hands.

I read a book many years ago about the "Dumbing Down of America" and, at the time, thought this would never happen, but, alas, I was very wrong because it's been happening since 2008 and will continue to get worse. Very sad because the country I once knew is no longer.

Article comment by: Good reason for GOP panic

Here's the bleak future that the GOP faces, like it or not:
In this election Obama began with 237 electoral votes safely in his column. Thus, out of all of the battleground states he needed only 33 more electoral votes to reach 270. Florida alone has 29 electoral votes, so just winning Florida and NH would have been enough. And, as the years go by and the demographics inexorably change (no matter how tightly GOP angry old white guys circle their wagons), states like FL, NC, VA, NV and, yes, AZ are trending more Blue. It won't be long before the Democratic candidate has 270 electoral college votes in the bag BEFORE the election begins! No wonder the GOP is in a panic and talking secession!

Article comment by: SECOND TERMS NEVER WORK

Re-electing a president to finish their job never works and we, as a nation, know that by our previous presidents who just didn't work out. Clinton was impeached and Bush never finished his war efforts. Same with Obama, he never even started his presidency in 2008 and you seriously think he's going to do anything for the next four years?

So interesting that the people who supported Bush- never critical at all, ever- even when he ran up huge deficits, started unnecessary wars of aggression (which were condemned by Eisenhower who said " Preventative war was an invention of Hitrler. Frankly,I would not even listen to anyone seriously that cam and talked about such a thing." And then when Bush tried to give Social Security away to Wall Street, and gave our drug policy over to big Pharma to soak us all for profits. Bush did more damage to the American ideal all around the world than Obama could manage in two lifetimes. Shame on these old white men who bring false witness and lie about our POTUS. Someone needs to be put out to pasture, it is time for all people who deal in lies to get out of public office. Because of Bush and the lack of opposition during his term, the problems we face are huge and we do not need people who deal in lies in public office. They only make solving problems more difficult when they stay in their fantasy land of fear.

I am new to Prescott, but I am appalled that Mr. Lamerson is a representative of the people with that kind of political rhetoric. His comments are toxic and one-sided for a representative of the people as a whole. He needs to go! Can't wait to become a voter in Prescott.

And just to confuse you I consider myself conservative {the word means to save or preserve} I vote for skill and progress Obama got it this time. party should not be religious.

I volunteered to re-elect President Obama. I voted early. I am not on government assistance. I pay my taxes. I do not want America to become a "Socialist County," and I do not think that is what this country is doing. I DO believe in Social Programs. We've had them for a long time and we need them. For the religious zealots the earliest churches had "social programs" to help the poor and needy as part of their doctrines. That said... Please keep your religion out of politics. It doesn't belong their.

Article comment by: Appealing To His Base

I wonder if Mr. Lamerson really believes the right-wing gibberish he wrote. I think it more likely that this is an unpaid-for appeal to the crazies that control the Republican primaries around here. The Teabaggers and Bible-thumpers control who wins the primaries in the Yavapai GOP. In the regular elections most of those "winners" run unopposed. Mr. Lamerson wants to move up and beyond Prescott. He cannot do that without the extremist vote. Hence this non-reality based letter. No wonder sensible Republicans avoid retiring here. Note the Bancruptcy of equity-member owned Hassayampa Golf Club, which is a huge sign of a declining area. Types like Lamerson are a real negative in every way. This beautiful area deserves so much better than Lamerson-types.

You elected your leader back in 2000, he and you promoted two wars that were paid for by your credit card. And you gave your job creating heros their well earned tax breaks so they could create a whole bunch of jobs but all they did was stash it under their mattresses. Now that you have to pay that credit card off your crying the blues and blaming a guy that has actually tried to do something about it. Imagine what today's economy might be if the right had actually tried to do something to help this country get back on its feet as opposed to holding it hostage until the "others" saw the true light. Yes, I know, they passed 30+ bills to defund or destroy the ACA full well knowing they would go nowhere, but that didn't stop them any more than fact checkers.

You charged it, now it's time for you to pay it off. I've paid off my own credit cards by working.

You lost the election primarily because of your propensity to use name calling instead of idea calling and forgetting that there actually are other people in this country besides you. How's that working for you. Must be working well since you're still doing it. And yet you can't see that some in the republican party have actually had the light turned on for them, all be it, a small night light located in a closed closet, but hey you've got to start somewhere. Get your head out of Faux's dark side and start using it for something other than a hat rack.

David Frum (as mentioned earlier) actually wrote an e-book that was available the day after the election about how Romney lost the election. Wonder how he figured that out. He's still a republican but he's one of those guys that's helping to turn the light on.

My hope for the future is to get rid of this four party system and return to some kind of normalcy but I don't hold my breath. Your symbiotic relationship is already starting to fall apart.

Article comment by: TO THE HORSE'S MOUTH

From a long-term integral member of the most intolerant, bigoted municipal body in an intolerant, bigoted state, a group that violates Open Meeting rules continually, that circumvents the expressed will of the voters to have a say in multi-million dollar projects, that engenders constant turnover in key management positions by micro-diddling and that demonstrates its incompetence to do its proper job and to respect the taxpayer, it is ludicrous to hear an opinion that praises local control over competent control. Go ahead Mr. Lamerson, sign that circulating petition for Arizona's secession from the manipulatedly-divisive United States. Sign it several times so it can get quickly to the 25,000 signatures required for it to get White House consideration, and see how well that works out for you.

In truth, I wish all of the Arizona-type states in which those petitions are circulating would be granted secession and relocation to some remote land like your kind did to the Indians. After two years of unresolvable chaos squabbling over power, at which you TPers are expert, you'd all be begging to return.
